There is a horse named Double-Trouble.
I used to follow my friend to a horse-riding club,where I have learnt many things about horses,except riding ! But I learnt how to walk a horse, which is basic before one take up the riding.
It tickles my mind suddenly now about all kinds of ‘Doubles’ of everyday life.
I know everybody enjoy jokes n light-funs in forum…not the serious ones really.
How about this one…a Double-thinking at the same time?
Life is full of Double standards,no doubt. Lol.
‘Doubles’ suggests simply a pleural, like partnership in sports, blah blah.
There are some known phrases widely used, yet not wellknown the meaning to many, especially when it forms part of many colorful expressions!
Here are some>>>
DOUBLE-CROSS…means swindle, cheat
This one comes from horse racing ,a sport that is notorious for its
Cheats. It refers to riders who are paid by the Bookies to Cross or
Lose the race, and then go on to win. The idea of Double cross is,
When ‘the cheat cheats the cheater’
ON THE DOUBLE…..means at a run, very fast.
This phrase comes from military march. The most practiced Quick
March demands 120 steps a minute with a 30 inch stride. While ‘on
the double’ is a fast trot of 180 steps per minute,that is designed to
move the troops across territory,at twice the rate of the Quick
March,but without exausting the troops.
Similarly,>>> Double-Dealer…means a hypocrite.
Double Whammy…a condition of two disaster striking one after another.
Infact,Whammy is a word for an ‘evil influence’.
Double-Think…..one who accepts contradictory ‘truths’ at the same time.
Double –Speak…deceptive language, statements that misrepresent the
Truth.( most appropriate for politicians).
‘’I know ,I have a reputation as a Double Dealer, but if you ever Double Cross me, I will have you disposed of At(on) The Double’’…..how is that???
I know ,u r a ‘double dealer’( jhaalmuri and popcorn),but if u ever ‘double cross’ me, I will BAN u ‘on the double’….HOWS THAT?????
