Muslim Aid has allocated £250,000 and pledged to raise a total of £3 million for emergency relief.
Together with partner organisations in the country Muslim Aid are actively delivering water, food and medicines to the worst-affected areas. Three Muslim Aid teams are working in Bagerhat, Patuakhali and Pirajpur, and within this, the six administrative areas of Morelgonj, Bagerhat Sadr, Mirzagong, Kalapara, Motbaria and Bhandaria. We are working in collaboration with partner organisations and have engaged 150 staff and over 700 volunteers. Muslim Aid are undertaking surveys, assessing water and sanitation and shelter needs, installing tube wells and sanitary latrines, as well as distributing food packs and medicines.
Food packs consisting of rice, lentils, salt and potatoes have been distributed to 5,000 families, with 4,000 items of clothing set to be distributed in the next few days along with 6,000 blankets.
An inflatable hospital has also been set up in the village of Saudkhali and has started providing emergency medical services. The hospital has a capacity to treat over 1,000 patients and has two doctors, 2 nurses and 2 paramedics. Another inflatable hospital will be set-up in the coming week, and the Muslim Aid staff plan to keep them running for at least a month depending on villagers’ needs.
Abdul Jolil Miah, Fundraising Manager at Muslim Aid has traveled to the field office in Dhaka and will be heading to the worst-affected regions. As he said, “Almost every family has lost someone. The scale of devastation is unimaginable and much worse than I thought. The people here desperately need help.”

Islamic Relief Emergency Response Islamic Relief (IR) has launched an urgent appeal for £3 million to help people affected by the cyclone.
IR is planning a two-phased response, encompassing emergency relief and recovery projects. Phase 1 will include emergency distributions of food, blankets, jerry cans and shelter kits. Phase 2 will have more of a long-term focus, involving shelter and livelihoods recovery.
IR has allocated £500,000 for the initial emergency response. More than 6,587 families across three cyclone-affected coastal districts have benefited from IR’s emergency distributions so far.
Essential Aid
In Bagerhat and Patuakhali, IR has distributed emergency relief packages to 1587 families. More distributions are planned for the coming weeks;
Each family received 5kg pre-cooked rice, 1 kg molasses, 1 kg salt, one box of matches and 6 candles;
Working in partnership with the UN Development Programme, IR is distributing 5kg pre-cooked rice and 1kg molasses to 5,000 families in Chandpur district.; Medical Services
IR has 2 medical teams active in the field, providing essential medical care to cyclone survivors in Bagerhat and Patuakhali;
Both teams are equipped with medicine and medical equipment and comprise a doctor, two nurses, a paramedic and a volunteer;
The medical teams have treated more than 200 people so far; IR and European Commission for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO)
ECHO has contributed 350,000 Euros for a three-month programme in Bagherhat and Patuakhali;
8,500 families will receive emergency shelter materials and 30kg rice, 5kg lentils, 2kg salt and 2 litres cooking oil;
3,200 families will receive a family kit which comprises clothes for men and women, a blanket, cooking pots and utensils, and soap and sanitary items.; IR and Arab Medical Union
The Arab Medical Union has contributed $20,000 USD for a three-month programme in Bagherhat and Patuakhali;
1400 families will be provided with medical care;
800 families will benefit from emergency food distributions and 765 families will receive shelter materials. Volunteers from IR’s community-based disaster preparedness programme have been active on the ground since Thursday. Before the cyclone hit, IR volunteers were helping evacuate people into shelters and they are now working with local authorities on the relief effort.
Cyclone Sidr hit Bangladesh only months after half the country was submerged under floodwaters. IR has been carrying out a flood emergency response since June 2007 and the project is currently in its final stages.
There is an urgent need for food, clean water, shelter and medicine.
