Insistence vs Consistence…
‘its only words, but words are where what they have to take your vote away’… From the Lyrics of the Bee Gees’ song ‘WORDS’ to the Obama-McCain’s war of words, to the Reality Shows in BD…its all ‘words’ that how one present and represent!
Language is important in any kind of show,i.e. talk-show, musical contests, and all that. Formal language must be used at all times in communications among host and participants and audience.
It is a great relief to see such developments even in ‘Tin chakar taroka’,where those participants are from the deprived social n economy class, speaking in very good bangla accent.
In reality, they would have been speaking mostly in street slang. We can see, even their relatives, young children all talking infront of camera to say something positive about them and requesting for votes, trying their best to maintain the status of the language! This is what I call ‘add grease to the wheels.’
This is not a small matter. Children pick up the lingo that older one’s use,and that the intonation and patterns of speech of formal language lacks, sometimes. The organizers of reality show take the initiative to spread the ‘culture of formal accents’ to all levels of the society, where they take care of the status of the language too.
School alone can’t play the role, bcoz many teachers in rural schools speak in local accent! It is hugely important that the ‘language’ message goes to all heads(brain) in our country, from kids to olds! The Reality shows in Bangladesh are seen by all Bengalis ‘in n out’ of the country…it has to be on par with those in West Bengal populations too who speak the same language.
Its fun to see natoks,cinemas,drama
s,where various characters speak in their own local accents that goes well with the script as needed. This is also important to understand every districts’ local accent. That doesn’t mean, we speak the street accent in an interview.
The language of ‘surf-culture’ is equally fun…it added a new dimension in our communication. I use such words to email friends only…but many has got tendency to use it in academics out of habit. Such habits can bring disaster in exam results! Once an African post -grad student told to his professor during oral exam,’I was at a BRY party last night’…an answer for some related matters…but its no-excuse to use such lingo in a formal place(BRY is barbeque for Africans, but how the hell another person would know it?).
Anyways…I am only cooking khichuri here…so, messing up with all unrelated topics and language, should be excused I guess? After all, I am only ‘Twittering’,na? Before I start talking about ‘twittering’, I better finish with what I started with!
Yah, it is a huge responsibility for the show-biz organizers to promote and save the dignity of our language, for the new generation to carry ‘up’ the fluency of our ‘good’ bangla. Music is the only chain N channel that can unite people’s heart, eradicate social classification. Bcoz , deep in every heart ,there is a dream like Martin Luther King, want to live in a society where one is judged by the content of one’s character…not by the skin color or financial status. If we have a ‘character’,we’re beyond classification! A polli-kobi Jashim uddin’s daughter could afford to study at Oxford,..a Abbas uddin’s Vawayia music is in every common-man’s mouth…but social status differs!
What does it mean? If a ‘Tin Chakar Taroka’ can be a playback singer….life can turn a full circle for anybody with a little support!
*****A tribute to the ‘tin chakar taroka’ team and Momotaz***** Thanks.
